The human system is both complex and adaptive. Under the right set of conditions, it has the amazing ability to evolve and self-organise to meet the unique demands of our individual lifestyles.

First, we need to take stock and ‘listen’. In most cases, our systems are sending (or have been sending) us clear signs that we are exceeding our limits. When we learn to take notice of these warnings, both our Mind & Body can spend longer periods in a state of growth; and can adapt, grow and develop resilience to our fast-paced world.

Health, function and / or performance rely on a multitude of factors. What makes things even more complex is that there is an interrelationship between each of the elements or systems at play. Often, when looking to improve health, function or performance, people focus on a single symptom or dysfunction. Intuitively, it makes sense, that if you make a change to part of the system, the entire system will be affected. While it would be easy to assume that a positive change in one area would naturally lead to a positive change to the entire system, this is not always the case. Given that we have a limited amount of resources, some changes come at the expense of the rest of the system and it is forced to compensate.

influence

After practicing ‘traditional’ Exercise Therapy for over twenty years, I have naturally adopted a more systematic approach. Everything I have studied and learnt during my career has helped me develop an understanding of how the human system functions and it’s natural ability to self-organize and adapt given the right set of conditions. Physical, mental and emotional health cannot be separated. An individual’s perception, which is formed over a lifetime dictates how our system functions. It is with this understanding, I can now see why there are so many different outcomes (good, bad or indifferent) with other activity-based therapies.

I have been fortunate enough to work alongside many amazing Practitioners / Therapists and Trainers during my career. Each has influenced me and I credit anyone who I have worked with helping shape me as in individual, and as a Therapist. Early influences include Physiotherapists (both musculoskeletal and breathing specialists), specialized Posture Alignment Practitioners and Exercise Physiologists (biomechanical and cardiac).

individual training

The biggest gift I can offer my patients is the ability to gain control over their own health, function and / or performance. The old adage, “You give a poor man a fish and you feed him for a day. You teach him to fish and you give him an occupation that will feed him for a lifetime”, is true in a health context as well. I teach my patients to gain an enhanced awareness of their own system– physical / mental and emotional.

The single most important thing I have learned is to treat the individual in front of me. Rather than getting caught up in specific symptoms or dysfunctions; or blindly following a predetermined protocol for a given disorder, I have learned to step back and view things from a more global perspective.

What some people might view as trivial can profoundly influence an individual’s health, function and / or performance. It is also important to understand that our internal environment, which is often the focus, is influenced by our external environment so gaining an understanding of an individuals lifestyle is critical.

meaningful change

Meaningful change requires a level of accountability. With practice, the enhanced sense of awareness and control on the part of the individual influences their own health, performance and function for extended periods of time. It creates the right set of conditions, for the human system to grow, develop and evolve to become more resilient to their individual lifestyle demands.

As a patient becomes more aware of how they are functioning and understands how to gain control over certain responses, they are forever able to influence their state of wellbeing. These conscious processes soon become internalised and this leads to long-lasting changes, which they are able to maintain over time with less and less conscious effort.

Feedback
Steph Roy

I really loved the class and it’s so awesome that you can go at your own pace and have awesome guidance to make sure you get it right. We are definitely hooked, when’s our next class? My daughter loves it as well. It makes me feel so good knowing that she is learning about her body and how much she can push herself not to mention doing the exercises correctly.

Casey Waterhouse

I had no feeling when I started with Olly. Now, I feel little flickers right down to my hip. Some therapists practically crossed me out; Olly has given me a chance. He calms me down and I’m starting to feel more.

I could perform movements I’d been practising for a year but unable to master, and the calm and clarity of thought was even more rewarding.
